Sunset Over Longs Peak
Longs Peak
Longs Peak, the impressive 14,259-foot fourteener, is beautifully situated in the expansive wilderness of Rocky Mountain National Park. This majestic peak can be seen towering behind Mt. Meeker from the charming city of Longmont, Colorado, as well as from many vantage points along the northern Front Range Urban Corridor. As one of the most prominent and recognizable mountains in Colorado, Longs Peak rises a dramatic 9,000 feet (2,700 m) above the western edge of the expansive Great Plains. The peak is named in honor of Major Stephen Harriman Long, who is famously said to have been the first to discover and recognize the grandeur of the Front Range on June 30, 1820, during an exploratory expedition commissioned by the U.S. government. Together with the nearby Mount Meeker, which boasts an elevation of 13,911 feet, these two stunning mountains are often affectionately referred to as the Twin Peaks. It is truly hard to take a captivating landscape photograph in northern Colorado without including the iconic Longs Peak in the frame. This beautiful picture captures the breathtaking scenery of spring flowers blooming vibrantly in the foreground, while Longs Peak in the background commands your attention, much like it always does whenever you gaze westward toward the stunning mountains in the NOCO region.
